AP Physics C Exam Dates 2027: Mechanics & E&M
AP Physics C: Mechanics is Monday, May 3, 2027 in Session 1. AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is Wednesday, May 5, 2027 in Session 2. The two-day separation matters for students taking both exams, and 2027 also introduces location-dependent start-time rules in some time zones.
| Exam | Regular-testing date | Session | Current format |
|---|---|---|---|
| AP Physics C: Mechanics | Monday, May 3, 2027 | Session 1 | 42 MCQs / 85 min + 4 FRQs / 95 min |
| AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism | Wednesday, May 5, 2027 | Session 2 | 42 MCQs / 85 min + 4 FRQs / 95 min |
Beginning in 2027, AP start times vary for some locations by UTC offset. For most schools in the lower 48 United States, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C., Session 1 remains 8:00 a.m. local time and Session 2 remains 12:00 p.m. local time. Students elsewhere should use their school/AP coordinator’s assigned start time.
2027 start-time changes: what Physics C students need to know
Most U.S. schools
For most schools in the lower 48 states, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C., the familiar 8 a.m. / 12 p.m. local pattern remains for Sessions 1 / 2.
Some locations changed
The 2027 schedule aligns exam starts differently across some UTC offsets to protect exam security. Alaska, for example, uses 7 a.m. / 11 a.m. local starts.
Coordinator confirmation wins
Use the published session as the planning anchor, but confirm the exact reporting and start time with your school. The coordinator controls local administration logistics.
If you take both Physics C exams
Before May 3
Mechanics gets the immediate priority. Finish a full Mechanics simulation, repair weak Units 1–7, and keep only light E&M retrieval so it stays active.
May 3 after Mechanics
Do not perform a long postmortem on Mechanics. Record only actionable notes, then shift the remaining study window to E&M.
May 4
Use one focused E&M day for fields/potential, circuits, magnetism/induction, formula conditions, and a short handwritten FRQ rehearsal—not a new content marathon.
May 5
E&M is Session 2. Protect sleep and normal routine; a later session is not a reason to add an exhausting morning cram block.
Late testing in 2027
If circumstances require late testing, the AP coordinator orders the appropriate alternate exam. Students should follow the school’s instructions rather than assuming they may simply appear on the late-testing date.
E&M late-testing slot
Thursday, May 20, 2027 · Session 1. An alternate exam version is used for late testing.
Mechanics late-testing slot
Thursday, May 20, 2027 · Session 2. This puts both Physics C late-testing exams on the same day in different sessions.
Build the study calendar backward from the exam date
8–12 weeks out
Complete first-pass learning and labs. Every week should mix new instruction with retrieval of earlier units so calculus, signs, graphs, and model selection do not decay.
4–7 weeks out
Increase mixed-unit MCQs and one FRQ-type task at a time. Use the error log to decide which topic pages to revisit instead of rereading whole units.
2–3 weeks out
Run timed sections under the 85/95-minute structure. Add at least one full simulation for the course you are actually taking.
Final week
Reduce new material. Review formula conditions, common mistakes, high-weight weak units, graph/experimental routines, and your personal error patterns.
Day before
Prioritize readiness: calculator, materials, route/reporting instructions, sleep, and light retrieval. Avoid replacing sleep with one last full exam.
Exam day
Use the exact session/start instructions from your school. Arrive with enough margin for check-in and technology procedures rather than targeting the nominal start minute.
Keep date, format, and scoring questions separate
Question counts, timing, hybrid digital workflow, FRQ types, and 2027 format changes belong on the format page.
Use the score gateway so Mechanics and E&M calculations remain separate and the correct historical/current packet format is selected.
Use all 13 units to route into the correct Mechanics or E&M branch before planning weekly review.
Regular testing, start time, and late testing are three different questions
Regular-testing date
This is the nationally published day and session: Mechanics on May 3 Session 1 and E&M on May 5 Session 2. It is the first fact to place on your calendar.
Local start time
The session label maps to a local clock time using the 2027 start-time rules. For many U.S. students that remains 8 a.m./12 p.m., but some UTC offsets have different times.
Reporting time
Your school may require arrival before the official start for check-in, seating, devices, materials, and instructions. The reporting time comes from the school, not from a generic web page.
Late-testing eligibility
Late testing uses scheduled alternate forms and must be arranged through the AP coordinator. It is not an optional second chance chosen simply because a student prefers another date.
Special planning issue: both late Physics C exams fall on May 20
If a student taking both Physics C courses is moved to late testing for both, the published schedule places E&M in Session 1 and Mechanics in Session 2 on Thursday, May 20, 2027. That is very different from the regular schedule, where Mechanics comes first and E&M follows two days later. Students in this situation should prepare for two full calculus-based physics exams on the same day and confirm logistics with their coordinator well in advance.
Regular order
May 3: Mechanics Session 1 → May 5: E&M Session 2. The gap allows a focused E&M review day after Mechanics.
Late-testing order
May 20: E&M Session 1 → Mechanics Session 2. There is no multi-day recovery or review interval between the two exams.
Three date mistakes to avoid
Using an old exam calendar
AP dates change every year. A correct 2026 Physics C date is not evidence for 2027. Keep the year visible in bookmarks, study plans, and school communications.
Assuming noon everywhere
Session 2 is not universally 12:00 p.m. in 2027. Some locations use different local start times based on UTC offset, so a search snippet that says afternoon is not enough for travel or reporting plans.
Treating late testing as flexible
The late-testing schedule is fixed and uses alternate forms. If a conflict or approved circumstance applies, resolve it through the AP coordinator before building travel, transport, or study plans around May 20.
Convert both Physics C sessions for your May 2027 UTC offset
Select the UTC offset used at the test location in May. The planner shows the scheduled regular and late-testing start times for both courses. Your AP coordinator remains the authority for reporting time, room, eligibility and local administration.
Schools may require earlier arrival for check-in, seating, devices and instructions. Use this tool for session conversion only; follow the coordinator’s reporting instructions.
Same-session conflicts to flag early
| Physics C exam | Regular slot | Other exam in the same session | Planning action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanics | May 3 · Session 1 | Human Geography | If you are registered for both, contact the AP coordinator rather than assuming one can simply be moved informally. |
| E&M | May 5 · Session 2 | Physics 1: Algebra-Based | Resolve the conflict through the school/AP coordinator before travel and study plans depend on a specific sitting. |
The full AP schedule contains other exams on those days, but these are the direct same-session conflicts for the two Physics C regular-testing slots.
