AP Physics C Exam Format 2027: Mechanics + E&M

Starting with the May 2027 exams, both AP Physics C courses use 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes and 4 free-response questions in 95 minutes. Each exam is hybrid digital: students answer MCQs in Bluebook, view FRQ prompts in Bluebook, and handwrite FRQ responses in a paper booklet.

Mechanics and E&M have the same section timing and question counts in 2027, but they are separate exams covering different courses. Each section is worth 50% of the exam score. The full timed testing structure is 180 minutes: 85 minutes of multiple choice plus 95 minutes of free response.

The 2027 Physics C exam is hybrid digital—not fully digital

Multiple choice in Bluebook

Students read and answer the selected-response section in the Bluebook testing app. Practice should include screen-based reading, question sets, graph inspection, and deliberate mark-and-return pacing.

FRQ prompts on screen, answers on paper

Students view free-response prompts in Bluebook but handwrite the solutions. Practice the physical act of switching between a screen prompt and a paper derivation, graph, diagram, or written justification.

Calculators are permitted

Calculator access does not replace symbolic setup. Many Physics C items are faster when units, sign, limiting behavior, proportional reasoning, or symmetry eliminate unnecessary computation.

Reference information is available

Use the current Physics C reference information during realistic simulations. During learning, the expanded Salar formula library can expose derivations and conditions that the exam reference sheet does not teach for you.

Section I: 42 MCQs in 85 minutes

Average clock

85 ÷ 42 is about 2.02 minutes per item. That is only an average: some conceptual questions should be faster so longer calculus, circuit, rotation, or representation questions have room.

Discrete + question sets

Expect both stand-alone questions and sets built around shared stimuli or data. In a set, distinguish information that applies to every item from what changes in each sub-question.

No partial credit

A correct model with an arithmetic slip still produces a wrong selected answer, so use units, sign, limits, vector direction, and order-of-magnitude checks before committing.

Triage matters

If the model is not clear quickly, mark the item and preserve the section clock. A two-minute average does not mean every problem deserves exactly two minutes.

Representations matter

Graphs, diagrams, tables, field maps, circuit schematics, and mathematical expressions are not decoration. Read the representation before substituting numbers.

Course weighting still applies

Mechanics and E&M each draw from their own current unit-weighting ranges. A mixed “Physics C” MCQ set cannot reproduce either operational exam accurately.

Section II: four FRQ types in a fixed 95-minute section

OrderCurrent FRQ typePointsWhat it rewards
1Mathematical Routines10Symbolic setup, derivation, calculus, calculation, and physics consistency.
2Translation Between Representations12Move correctly among graphs, diagrams, equations, tables, and written physical descriptions.
3Experimental Design and Analysis10Measurements, procedure, data treatment, graphing/linearization, uncertainty, and evidence-based conclusions.
4Qualitative/Quantitative Translation8Connect a physical prediction or explanation with quantitative dependence and mathematical reasoning.
40 scored FRQ points across 95 minutes

The 10/12/10/8 point pattern is useful for pacing awareness, but point value is not a command to spend an exact number of minutes per point. Leave enough time to read prompts, label work, and return to incomplete parts.

What changed for May 2027?

MCQ count increased

The 2027 Physics C exam uses 42 MCQs rather than the 40-question structure used in the immediately preceding redesign years.

Section I is now 85 minutes

Current simulations should use 85 minutes for the 42-question multiple-choice section, not an older 80-minute clock.

Section II is now 95 minutes

The current free-response section is 95 minutes for four questions. Do not use the prior 100-minute section timing when claiming a 2027 simulation.

Do not discard older physics practice

Older released or high-quality problems remain useful for content and reasoning, but normalize their timing and section architecture before treating them as a current-format mock exam.

Exam-day workflow students should rehearse

1

Read for the model

Identify the system, requested quantity, representation, and governing principle before starting algebra.

2

Set conventions

Choose axes, signs, loop directions, surface normals, rotation axes, or current directions before equations make those choices implicit.

3

Show evidence

On FRQs, make the scored physics visible: diagrams, symbolic equations, calculus steps, procedure logic, graph features, and justification.

4

Check the result

Use units, sign, limiting cases, symmetry, conservation, vector direction, and endpoint behavior as independent checks.

Mechanics and E&M share a format, not a content bank

How to practice the hybrid workflow before exam day

Use Bluebook previews when available

The real interface matters. Practice scrolling, reading graphs on screen, navigating question sets, and managing the transition from digital prompts to handwritten work so the format itself does not consume attention on exam day.

Handwrite the full FRQ evidence

A typed solution can hide handwriting pace, page organization, graph-labeling, and diagram-space problems. For realistic FRQ practice, write the derivation, diagram, graph, and justification on paper while reading the prompt from a screen.

Build calculator restraint

Because calculators are permitted, students sometimes calculate too early. First write the symbolic relationship, units, sign convention, or limiting behavior. Then use the calculator where it actually saves time or reduces arithmetic risk.

Use the same reference conditions

A full simulation should use only the reference information available on exam day. Broader formula notes are useful during learning but should be removed when measuring exam readiness.

Current-format quality checklist

142 MCQs in 85 minutes. A 40-question/80-minute packet is not a faithful May 2027 Section I simulation.
24 FRQs in 95 minutes. A 100-minute four-question block reflects the immediately preceding timing, not the 2027 timing.
3Four current FRQ task types. The section should contain Mathematical Routines, Translation Between Representations, Experimental Design and Analysis, and Qualitative/Quantitative Translation.
4Correct course content. Mechanics practice should draw only from Units 1–7 and E&M practice only from Units 8–13.
5Hybrid response rehearsal. Selected responses are digital; FRQ answers are handwritten. A fully paper or fully typed mock misses part of the operational skill.

Combined Physics C exam-format FAQs

Do Mechanics and E&M use the same exam format in 2027?

Yes. Each uses 42 MCQs in 85 minutes and four FRQs in 95 minutes, with each section worth 50% of the score. They remain separate exams with separate content.

Is AP Physics C fully digital?

No. The current workflow is hybrid digital: multiple-choice responses are entered in Bluebook, FRQ prompts are viewed there, and free-response answers are handwritten in a paper booklet.

Can I use a 2025 or 2026 packet for 2027 practice?

Yes for relevant physics content and reasoning. For a full current-format simulation, normalize the architecture to 42 MCQs/85 minutes and four FRQs/95 minutes.

Are calculators permitted on both Physics C exams?

Yes. Calculator availability should support arithmetic and checking, not replace symbolic setup, units, signs, geometry, model conditions, or written reasoning.

Should I combine Mechanics and E&M questions into one score?

No. The courses share a section structure but are separate exams. Keep content banks, practice composites and score interpretation separate.
