Mechanics Exam Date 2027: Monday, May 3, 2027
AP Physics C: Mechanics is scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2027 in Session 1. For 2027, session labels are more reliable than assuming a universal 8 a.m. or noon start because some locations now use different local start times.
AP Physics C: Mechanics is scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2027 · Session 1. The exam is hybrid digital: multiple-choice questions and FRQ prompts are delivered in Bluebook, while free-response answers are handwritten in a paper booklet. The current 2027 structure is 42 MCQs in 85 minutes and 4 FRQs in 95 minutes, weighted 50/50.
Do not assume Session 1 always means 8 a.m. or Session 2 always means noon
Most U.S. schools
For most schools—including the lower 48 states, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C.—Session 1 still begins at 8 a.m. local time and Session 2 at 12 p.m. local time.
2027 location changes
Some locations use different local times based on their May UTC offset. Alaska, for example, uses 7 a.m. for Session 1 and 11 a.m. for Session 2.
International schools
International test centers should use the published UTC-offset schedule rather than converting from a U.S. clock time. The school/AP coordinator supplies the exact reporting time.
Reporting time is earlier
The listed session start is not the time to arrive at school. Follow your coordinator’s reporting instructions and allow time for seating, Bluebook setup, materials, and required administration steps.
College Board changed start-time handling in some time zones to protect secure exam content. Use Session 1 as the stable schedule label, then confirm the corresponding local start time for your test center.
Find the scheduled Session 1 start time for your May UTC offset
Select the UTC offset used at your test location in May 2027. This converts the official session table; your school/AP coordinator remains the authority for the exact reporting time and room.
It converts the published session start table only. Schools set reporting/check-in instructions earlier than the exam start and may need additional time for seating, device readiness, and administration.
Regular date, same-session conflict, and late-testing route
| Situation | Mechanics schedule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Regular testing | Monday, May 3, 2027 · Session 1 | Use the session label plus your location’s official May-2027 start-time rule. Your coordinator supplies the reporting location/time. |
| Same-session exam on the regular schedule | Human Geography | If you are registered for both exams in the same timeslot, contact the school/AP coordinator rather than attempting to choose a different start time yourself. |
| Physics C late testing | Thursday, May 20, 2027 · Session 2 | Late testing uses an alternate secure form and is arranged through the school for eligible circumstances, including certain schedule conflicts. |
What happens on Monday, May 3, 2027
| Part | Current 2027 structure | What to rehearse before exam day |
|---|---|---|
| Section I | 42 MCQs · 85 minutes · 50% | Bluebook navigation, question sets, graphs/data, symbolic reasoning, calculator use when helpful, and pace without overinvesting in one item. |
| Section II | 4 FRQs · 95 minutes · 50% | Read prompts on screen, handwrite complete work, create representations, justify reasoning, design/analyze experiments, and keep units/signs visible. |
| Reference information | Available in Bluebook and printed reference material | Know what is provided versus what must be derived, and practice finding the right model quickly rather than memorizing page layout. |
| Calculator | Permitted | Use a permitted calculator efficiently, but keep symbolic setup and physical reasoning explicit for free response. |
2027 late testing
If your school arranges approved late testing, both Physics C exams move to Thursday, May 20, but in opposite sessions: E&M is Session 1 and Mechanics is Session 2. Students taking both courses should treat this as a same-day two-exam schedule and plan food, hydration, calculator/material checks, and mental pacing accordingly.
Do not self-select late testing
Late testing is arranged through the school/AP coordinator for eligible situations. Do not assume the alternate date is an optional second sitting.
Same-day Physics C warning
On May 20, a student taking both Physics C exams can face E&M first and Mechanics second. Keep the two formula/practice systems separate during final review even though the exams share the same format.
Backward study calendar from Monday, May 3, 2027
6–8 weeks before
Finish first-pass coverage and run a unit-by-unit diagnostic. Mark every miss by content unit and by skill: model selection, calculus, representation, experimental reasoning, communication, or pacing.
4–5 weeks before
Repair the largest content gaps with complete lessons and fresh problems. Start mixing units so you must choose the governing model instead of being told which chapter applies.
2–3 weeks before
Use timed 42-question MCQ blocks and complete four-question handwritten FRQ sessions. Rehearse the hybrid workflow rather than practicing only untimed worksheets.
Final 7 days
Reduce new content. Review error logs, model conditions, graphs, equations, lab-design habits, and a small number of targeted weak topics. Protect sleep and exam-day routine.
If you are taking both Physics C exams
Regular schedule gives a one-day gap
Mechanics is Monday, May 3 and E&M is Wednesday, May 5. Use Tuesday for targeted E&M retrieval and light mixed practice—not a complete Mechanics postmortem.
Separate error logs
Mechanics and E&M share calculus and science practices but not content weighting. Tag mistakes by course so one final-week plan does not hide the other course’s weak units.
Shared exam workflow
Both use the same 42/85 + 4/95 hybrid structure. Once the workflow is automatic, spend the remaining practice time on course-specific model selection.
Different prerequisite demands
E&M expects stronger prior calculus-based mechanics habits. If a vector/calculus weakness appears during E&M review, repair the transferable skill rather than relearning unrelated Mechanics content.

Mechanics 2027 exam-date FAQs
What time is the Mechanics exam in 2027?
The stable schedule label is Session 1. For most schools in the lower 48 United States, Hawaii, and Washington, D.C., Session 1 is 8 a.m. local and Session 2 is noon. Some other locations use different times by May UTC offset, so confirm your test center’s exact reporting instructions.
Is Monday, May 3, 2027 the only possible testing date?
It is the regular scheduled date. Approved late testing is Thursday, May 20, 2027 · Session 2. Late testing is coordinated by the school and uses an alternate secure exam; it is not a self-selected second attempt.
What if I have another AP exam in the same session?
The regular schedule places Human Geography in the same session as Mechanics. If you are registered for both, notify your coordinator so the conflict can be handled under the current testing rules.
How long is the Mechanics exam?
The two scored sections total three hours: 42 MCQs in 85 minutes and four FRQs in 95 minutes. Administrative instructions, transitions, and check-in are outside that 180-minute scored-section total.
Should I arrive at the published session start time?
No. The published start is not the reporting time. Follow the earlier arrival/check-in instruction given by your school or test center.
