Practice 3 carries approximately 25–35 percent of the multiple-choice section. It is a major focus of free-response Question 2 and is required in the inference and multi-focus questions. The framework does not limit “analysis” to calculator output; a graph, a well-organized table, an estimated probability, or a correctly labeled interval is also analysis.
Practice 4: Interpret Results
Interpretation is the practice that converts a mathematical object into a statistically meaningful statement. The student must identify what a value describes, use the correct population or variable, preserve units, and avoid a stronger claim than the design supports. For example, an association in observational data does not establish causation, and a confidence interval does not say that the probability of a fixed parameter lying inside the computed interval is the confidence level.
Practice 4 also includes checking conditions. A method is not justified merely because its name resembles the question. The student may need to verify randomization, independence, sample-size conditions, large counts, approximate normality, or expected-count requirements. Practice 4 contributes approximately 25–35 percent of multiple-choice questions and appears heavily in Questions 2, 3, and 4 of the free-response section.

The five-unit AP Statistics Exam syllabus
The revised AP Statistics syllabus contains five units. The unit sequence is a recommended instructional pathway rather than a rule that every school must follow in exactly the same order. The examination, however, assesses the required learning objectives and essential knowledge within the framework, regardless of how a teacher organizes the year.
The five units create a logical progression. Unit 1 establishes the language of data, displays, summary measures, sampling, and experimental design. Unit 2 develops probability and distributions, which explain random variation. Unit 3 applies those ideas to inference for categorical data and proportions. Unit 4 develops inference for quantitative data and means. Unit 5 studies relationships between two quantitative variables through correlation and least-squares regression.
Exploring One-Variable Data and Collecting Data
Introduces statistical studies, variables, displays and numerical summaries for one variable, comparisons of distributions, random sampling, sources of bias, and experimental design.
Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions
Covers two categorical variables, simulation, probability rules, conditional probability, independence, random variables, binomial and normal distributions, sampling distributions, and the Central Limit Theorem.
Inference for Categorical Data: Proportions
Develops estimators, confidence intervals and tests for one and two proportions, p-values, Type I and Type II errors, and chi-square tests for homogeneity or independence.
Inference for Quantitative Data: Means
Introduces sampling distributions for means and t-based confidence intervals and tests for one population mean, paired mean differences, and differences between two population means.
Regression Analysis
Examines scatterplots, correlation, linear models, residuals, residual plots, least-squares regression, predicted responses, and interpretation of regression results.
What the percentages mean
The published ranges apply to the multiple-choice section. They communicate the approximate share of Section I associated with each unit. Because Section I contains 42 questions, the ranges do not translate into a fixed whole-number count that is identical every year. The examination can also contain integrated questions that draw on several topics.
The ranges show that Unit 1 has the largest possible share, but they do not make the later units optional. Units 3 and 4 contain the inference procedures at the center of Question 3, while Unit 5 can appear in a dedicated multiple-choice question set and in integrated free-response work. The complete AP Statistics Exam is therefore broader than a proportional allocation table.
Fifty-five teachable topics
Across the five units, the framework identifies 55 topics: 13 in Unit 1, 12 in Unit 2, 15 in Unit 3, 10 in Unit 4, and 5 in Unit 5. Each topic page in the official course description connects a learning objective to one or more statistical practices and essential knowledge statements. The exam blueprint is built from those objectives and statements.
The following chapters explain each unit as part of the identity of the AP Statistics Exam. They describe what belongs to the syllabus without turning the chapter into a lesson-by-lesson preparation course.
Exploring one-variable data and collecting data
Unit 1 is the broad foundation of the AP Statistics Exam. It introduces the objects that statistics studies—populations, samples, individuals, variables, data, distributions, and statistical questions—and then examines how data are represented, summarized, compared, and collected. Its approximate multiple-choice weighting is 20–30 percent, the largest published range among the five units.
The unit begins with the idea of a statistical study. Data are collected from a sample to answer an investigative question about a larger population or process. A datum is one piece of information; a data set is a collection of observations. The population contains all individuals or items of interest, while the sample contains the observed subset. These distinctions matter because conclusions are often intended to extend beyond the observed data.
Variables and the structure of a data set
A variable records a characteristic of an individual or observational unit. Categorical variables place individuals into groups or labels. Quantitative variables record numerical measurements for which arithmetic has meaningful interpretation. The AP Statistics Exam may ask students to classify variables, identify cases and variables in a table, recognize units, distinguish an explanatory variable from a response variable, or determine what information is needed to answer a question.
Unit 1 focuses on one-variable distributions before the course moves to relationships between variables. For a categorical variable, the distribution is described by counts, proportions, percentages, and graphical displays such as bar charts. For a quantitative variable, the distribution is represented by dotplots, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, boxplots, or other suitable graphs.
Describing quantitative distributions
A complete description examines shape, center, variability, and unusual features. Shape can be symmetric, skewed, uniform, unimodal, bimodal, or otherwise patterned. Center may be represented by the mean or median. Variability may be described by range, interquartile range, variance, or standard deviation. Gaps, clusters, outliers, and extreme observations may reveal important features that a single summary number hides.
The AP Statistics Exam expects descriptions to refer to the actual variable and its units. Saying that a histogram is “skewed right” identifies shape but does not fully communicate what the distribution represents. Statistical language gains meaning when it is attached to people, measurements, times, scores, costs, distances, or other quantities.
Numerical summaries
Unit 1 includes the mean, median, quartiles, five-number summary, range, interquartile range, variance, and standard deviation. The mean uses every observation and is sensitive to extreme values. The median divides an ordered distribution and is resistant to extreme values. The interquartile range describes the spread of the middle half of the data. Standard deviation measures typical distance from the mean in a distributional sense.
Students also compare relative positions within a distribution and examine transformations. Adding the same constant to every observation changes measures of center but does not change measures of spread. Multiplying every observation by a positive constant scales both center and spread. Standardization expresses a value in standard-deviation units relative to a mean.
Comparing distributions
Comparison requires parallel language. A student should compare the same features—shape with shape, center with center, and spread with spread—across groups. Graphs such as side-by-side boxplots can make medians, quartiles, ranges, and potential outliers easy to compare, while histograms or dotplots preserve more information about shape. The exam may provide several displays and ask which one supports a claim or reveals a feature most clearly.
Investigative questions and data collection
The revised framework adds explicit attention to investigative questions. A valid statistical question anticipates variability and requires data. The question determines the target population, the variables to be measured, and the type of study needed. Poorly defined questions can produce data that do not answer the intended problem, regardless of how sophisticated the later analysis becomes.
Random sampling
Sampling methods include simple random samples, stratified random samples, cluster samples, and systematic samples. Each method selects observations differently. A simple random sample gives every possible sample of a stated size an equal chance. Stratified sampling divides the population into similar groups and samples within each group. Cluster sampling randomly selects natural groups and observes individuals within selected clusters. Systematic sampling follows a fixed interval after a random start.
Random sampling supports generalization because it reduces systematic selection patterns and provides a probability basis for inference. A large convenience sample can still be biased, while a smaller well-designed random sample can provide more defensible evidence.
Sampling problems and bias
Unit 1 includes voluntary-response bias, undercoverage, nonresponse, response bias, wording effects, and other threats to representativeness. Bias is a systematic tendency in the data-collection process, not simply random variability. Increasing the sample size does not automatically remove bias. A very large sample obtained through a distorted method may estimate the wrong quantity very precisely.
Experimental design
The final portion of Unit 1 distinguishes observational studies from experiments. An observational study records existing conditions without deliberately assigning treatments. An experiment imposes treatments and measures responses. Random assignment creates comparable treatment groups in the long run and supports cause-and-effect conclusions when the design is properly implemented.
Core experimental ideas include treatments, factors, levels, experimental units, control groups, placebos, blinding, replication, blocking, matched pairs, and confounding. The AP Statistics Exam may ask what conclusion a design supports, how to improve a study, why random assignment is used, or whether a variable is a confounder.

Probability, random variables, and probability distributions
Unit 2 explains random behavior and provides the probability foundation for statistical inference. Its approximate multiple-choice weighting is 15–25 percent. It begins with two categorical variables, develops probability through tables and simulations, introduces random variables and theoretical distributions, and ends with sampling distributions and the Central Limit Theorem.
Two categorical variables
Two-way tables organize counts for combinations of two categorical variables. From these counts, students determine joint, marginal, and conditional distributions. A marginal distribution describes one variable using totals across the categories of the other. A conditional distribution describes one variable within a specified category of the other. Comparing conditional distributions helps determine whether an association may exist.
The AP Statistics Exam can present a table in counts, proportions, or percentages and ask students to identify the relevant denominator. Many errors in categorical analysis come from dividing by the grand total when the question requires a row or column total.
Simulation and empirical probability
Simulation represents a random process using physical devices, random digits, or calculator and computer tools. A valid simulation must define how random outcomes correspond to the real situation, repeat the process, record the statistic of interest, and interpret the simulated distribution or proportion. Simulation can estimate a probability that is difficult to calculate directly and can later model what would occur under a null hypothesis.
Probability rules
The unit includes events, sample spaces, complements, unions, intersections, mutually exclusive events, conditional probability, and independence. The complement rule calculates the probability that an event does not occur. The addition rule handles the probability of a union. The multiplication rule connects joint and conditional probabilities. Independence means knowledge of one event does not change the probability of the other.
Mutually exclusive and independent are not the same. Mutually exclusive events cannot occur together. If two events with positive probability are mutually exclusive, the occurrence of one makes the other impossible and therefore changes its probability. Such events are not independent.
Random variables
A random variable assigns a numerical value to each outcome of a random process. A probability distribution lists or represents the possible values and their probabilities. The expected value is the long-run average value of the random variable over repeated trials, while the standard deviation describes variability around that expected value.
The revised AP Statistics course removes the former dedicated topic on combining random variables, but students still need to understand parameters of random variables and the distributions explicitly retained in the framework.
The binomial distribution
A binomial random variable counts successes in a fixed number of independent trials with two possible outcomes and constant success probability. The distribution provides probabilities for exact counts or ranges of counts. Its mean and standard deviation are determined by the number of trials and the success probability.
The AP Statistics Exam may ask whether a setting is binomial, calculate a binomial probability, interpret the mean or standard deviation, or compare a result with what the model predicts. The wording of “success” is contextual and does not imply that the outcome is desirable.
The normal distribution
Normal distributions are symmetric, bell-shaped models described by a mean and standard deviation. Standardization converts a value to a z-score, identifying how many standard deviations it lies above or below the mean. Normal probabilities, percentiles, and inverse calculations connect areas under the curve to values of the variable.
The empirical rule describes the approximate proportions within one, two, and three standard deviations of the mean for a normal distribution. The exam may use normal models directly or compare observed distributions with normal behavior.
Sampling distributions
A sampling distribution describes the values of a statistic over all possible random samples of a fixed size from a population. It is different from the distribution of individual observations and different from the one sample actually collected. The center, spread, and shape of a sampling distribution determine how well a statistic estimates a population parameter.
The Central Limit Theorem explains why the sampling distribution of a sample mean becomes approximately normal under appropriate conditions as the sample size increases, even when the population distribution is not normal. This result supports later confidence intervals and hypothesis tests.

Inference for categorical data: proportions
Unit 3 introduces formal statistical inference for categorical outcomes and proportions. It has an approximate multiple-choice weighting of 15–25 percent and contains 15 topics, making it the longest unit by topic count. The unit moves from estimators and sampling distributions to confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, error types, comparisons of two proportions, and chi-square methods.
Parameters, statistics, estimators, and estimates
A parameter describes a population, while a statistic describes a sample. An estimator is a rule or statistic used to estimate a parameter, and an estimate is the numerical value produced from a particular sample. The sample proportion is an estimator of a population proportion. The quality of an estimator is assessed through bias and variability in its sampling distribution.
The AP Statistics Exam expects notation and language to match the target. A hypothesis about a population proportion should be stated using the population parameter rather than the observed sample proportion. A confidence interval estimates the parameter, not the sample statistic that was already calculated.
Sampling distributions for sample proportions
The sampling distribution of a sample proportion has a center equal to the population proportion under random sampling. Its standard deviation depends on the population proportion and sample size, with larger samples producing less variability. Under suitable large-count conditions, the distribution is approximately normal.
Confidence intervals for one population proportion
A confidence interval combines a sample estimate with a margin of error to create a range of plausible values for the population proportion. The confidence level describes the long-run success rate of the method over repeated random samples. It does not assign a probability to the fixed population parameter after the interval has been computed.
Students identify the procedure, verify random and independence conditions, check that the sample has enough successes and failures, calculate the interval, and interpret it in context. A confidence interval can also be used to assess whether a proposed population value is plausible.
Hypothesis tests for one population proportion
A significance test begins with a null hypothesis that specifies a population proportion and an alternative hypothesis that describes the competing claim. The test statistic measures how far the sample result lies from the null value in standard-error units. The p-value is the probability, assuming the null hypothesis is true, of obtaining a result at least as extreme as the observed result in the direction defined by the alternative.
The conclusion compares the p-value with the significance level and addresses the evidence for the alternative claim. The test does not calculate the probability that the null hypothesis is true, and failure to reject the null hypothesis does not prove that the null value is correct.
Type I and Type II errors
A Type I error occurs when the null hypothesis is rejected even though it is true. A Type II error occurs when the null hypothesis is not rejected even though the alternative is true. The meaning and consequences of each error depend on the real decision. The significance level controls the probability of a Type I error under the null hypothesis, while power is related to the ability to detect a specified alternative.
Inference for two proportions
The course extends one-proportion ideas to the difference between two population proportions. Students examine the sampling distribution of the difference between sample proportions, construct confidence intervals, and carry out hypothesis tests. The procedures require independent groups or samples and appropriate success-failure conditions.
For a two-proportion test of equality, the standard error under the null hypothesis uses a pooled estimate because the null states that the population proportions are the same. For a confidence interval, the standard error uses the two sample proportions separately because no equality is imposed.
Chi-square tests for homogeneity and independence
Chi-square methods analyze counts in a two-way table. A test for homogeneity compares the distribution of one categorical variable across populations or treatments. A test for independence examines whether two categorical variables are associated within one population. The calculation compares observed counts with expected counts under the null model.
The chi-square statistic sums standardized squared differences between observed and expected counts. Degrees of freedom depend on the number of rows and columns. Expected-count conditions ensure that the chi-square approximation is appropriate. The revised course retains tests for homogeneity and independence but removes the former chi-square goodness-of-fit topics.

Inference for quantitative data: means
Unit 4 applies statistical inference to quantitative variables and population means. Its approximate multiple-choice weighting is 10–20 percent. The unit includes one-sample, paired, and two-sample t procedures and builds directly on the concepts of sampling distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, p-values, and conditions developed earlier.
Why t distributions appear
Inference for a population mean generally uses the sample standard deviation because the population standard deviation is unknown. Replacing the unknown population standard deviation with a sample estimate introduces additional uncertainty. The t distribution accounts for that uncertainty and has heavier tails than the standard normal distribution. Its exact shape depends on degrees of freedom.
As degrees of freedom increase, the t distribution approaches the standard normal distribution. For small samples, the heavier tails produce larger critical values for a given confidence level. The appropriate procedure is selected from the structure of the data, not merely from the presence of a numerical mean.
One-sample t inference
A one-sample t interval estimates a population mean from one random sample. A one-sample t-test evaluates a claim about that population mean. The method requires attention to randomization, independence, the 10 percent condition when sampling without replacement, and the shape of the population or sample distribution, especially for small samples.
Paired data
Paired data arise when observations are naturally matched or when the same individuals are measured twice. The analysis converts each pair to one difference and performs one-sample t inference on the mean difference. Treating paired observations as two independent samples discards the matching structure and uses the wrong model.
Examples include before-and-after measurements, twins or matched subjects, two methods applied to the same object, or repeated measurements on the same participant. The parameter is the population mean of the paired differences, and the direction used to define the difference must remain consistent.
Two-sample t inference
Two-sample t procedures compare the means of two independent populations or treatment groups. The confidence interval estimates the difference between population means. The hypothesis test evaluates a null claim, often that the difference equals zero. The AP Statistics framework uses calculator-supported t procedures and does not require assuming equal population variances as a default pooled method.
Conditions and interpretation
Inference for means is sensitive to strong skewness and outliers, especially with small samples. Larger samples make t procedures more robust because the sampling distribution of the mean becomes closer to normal. The AP Statistics Exam may provide a graph or description that students must use when judging whether the procedure is appropriate.
As in Unit 3, an interval conclusion must identify the population parameter and context, while a test conclusion must connect the p-value to the significance level and answer the research claim. The distinction between sample statistics and population parameters remains essential.

Regression analysis
Unit 5 examines relationships between two quantitative variables. It has an approximate multiple-choice weighting of 10–20 percent and contains five topics: graphical representations, correlation, linear regression models, residuals, and least-squares regression. Although it is the shortest unit by topic count, it receives a substantial examination range and one of the revised multiple-choice sets specifically focuses on regression analysis.
Scatterplots
A scatterplot displays paired quantitative observations, placing the explanatory variable on the horizontal axis and the response variable on the vertical axis. The relationship is described through direction, form, strength, and unusual features. A positive association means larger values of the explanatory variable tend to occur with larger response values. A negative association means larger explanatory values tend to occur with smaller response values.
Form may be linear or nonlinear. Strength describes how closely observations follow the overall pattern. Outliers, clusters, gaps, and influential observations can affect the interpretation of the relationship and the fitted model.
Correlation
The correlation coefficient measures the direction and strength of a linear relationship between two quantitative variables. It is unitless, ranges from –1 to 1, and is unchanged by switching measurement units through positive linear transformations. Correlation is sensitive to outliers and does not describe nonlinear relationships adequately.
Correlation does not establish causation. A strong correlation can arise because of a lurking variable, reverse direction, selection effects, or coincidence. The ability to make a causal claim depends on study design, especially random assignment, not on the magnitude of the correlation coefficient.
Linear regression models
A linear regression model predicts the response from the explanatory variable using an equation with an intercept and slope. The slope represents the predicted change in the response for a one-unit increase in the explanatory variable. The intercept represents the predicted response when the explanatory variable equals zero, but it may lack practical meaning if zero is outside the observed range or impossible in context.
Predictions made within the range of observed explanatory values are interpolation. Predictions far beyond that range are extrapolation and may be unreliable because the observed linear pattern may not continue.
Residuals and residual plots
A residual is the observed response minus the predicted response. Positive residuals correspond to observations above the fitted line, and negative residuals correspond to observations below it. A residual plot displays residuals against explanatory values or predicted values and helps assess whether a linear model is appropriate.
A random scatter of residuals around zero supports linear form. Curvature suggests that a nonlinear model may be more suitable. Changing spread can indicate nonconstant variability. A large residual marks an observation poorly predicted by the model.
Least-squares regression
The least-squares regression line minimizes the sum of squared residuals. Its slope and intercept are connected to the means, standard deviations, and correlation of the variables. The coefficient of determination describes the proportion of variation in the response explained by the linear model using the explanatory variable.
The AP Statistics Exam may ask students to calculate a predicted value or residual, interpret the slope or coefficient of determination, identify an influential point, compare models, or judge a residual plot. The revised course no longer includes a separate unit on inference for regression slopes.

What changed for the 2026–27 course and May 2027 exam
The AP Statistics course was revised for the 2026–27 school year to align more closely with current introductory college statistics courses and the statistical problem-solving process emphasized by the American Statistical Association. These revisions affect both the content framework and the examination. A reliable introduction must identify them because older books, websites, and videos may still describe the previous nine-unit course and six-question free-response section.

New or expanded emphasis
The revised course adds explicit topics on investigative questions. This change places the beginning of the statistical process inside the assessed curriculum. Students must recognize that a meaningful statistical study starts with a question requiring data and variation, not with a formula selected after numbers have already been collected.
The framework also organizes skills into four practices that are visibly connected to examination weighting and free-response question types. Formulation, collection, analysis, and interpretation are therefore not merely broad educational goals; they are part of the assessment blueprint.
Topics removed from the revised course
The College Board identifies several topics removed from the required framework: analyzing departures from linearity as a former dedicated topic, combining random variables, the geometric distribution, chi-square goodness-of-fit testing, and the former Unit 9 on inference for quantitative data involving slopes. Their removal does not mean the ideas are invalid statistics. It means they are no longer required AP Statistics Exam content under the revised course.
A student may encounter these ideas in a local class, textbook enrichment section, college statistics course, or advanced study. However, a webpage claiming to reproduce the May 2027 syllabus should not list them as required examination units.
What did not change conceptually
The AP Statistics Exam remains an introductory, non-calculus-based college-level assessment. It continues to emphasize data exploration, sampling and experimentation, probability, inference, regression, technology, and written interpretation. Calculators and reference information remain available. The final score remains on the AP 1–5 scale, and colleges continue to set their own credit and placement rules.
Calculators, formulas, tables, and statistical notation
A graphing calculator with statistical capabilities is expected for both sections of the AP Statistics Exam.
