- 1,806 topic MCQs + 172 topic FRQs, plus five full model papers.
What you need to know before you study
The course is algebra-based, but it expects strong reasoning with diagrams, graphs, equations, data and written explanations.
For the 2027 exam, AP Physics 1 uses a hybrid digital format. You complete 42 multiple-choice questions in Bluebook in 85 minutes, then view four free-response prompts digitally and handwrite your responses in 95 minutes. Each section contributes 50% of the score.
The four FRQ tasks are mathematical routines, translation between representations, experimental design and analysis, and qualitative/quantitative translation. That means successful preparation cannot stop at memorizing equations: you need to explain models, interpret graphs and design or analyze experiments.
Study AP Physics 1 by the problem you need to solve
Each resource has a different purpose: reference, exam preparation, practice, released-question analysis or laboratory work.
Formula & equation sheet
Find relationships by unit and learn what each equation means, when it applies and what assumptions sit behind it.
Past papers & released FRQs
Use the newest released questions, scoring guidance and student-response evidence without treating outdated formats as current.
Labs & experimental design
Plan measurements, graphs, controls, uncertainty and evidence for hands-on investigations and experimental-design FRQs.
Practice tests
Work mixed AP-style questions, diagnose the model or representation you missed, then return to the relevant concept.
The 8 AP Physics 1 units
The current course moves from motion and forces to conservation models, rotation, oscillations and fluids. Units 2 and 3 carry the largest MCQ weighting ranges.
Kinematics
Scalars/vectors, displacement/velocity/acceleration, motion representations, reference frames and two-dimensional motion.
Force and Translational Dynamics
Systems and center of mass, free-body diagrams, Newton’s laws, gravity, friction, springs and circular motion.
Work, Energy, and Power
Translational kinetic energy, work, potential energy, conservation of energy and power.
Linear Momentum
Linear momentum, impulse, conservation of momentum, and elastic/inelastic collisions.
Torque and Rotational Dynamics
Rotational kinematics, linear/rotational connections, torque, rotational inertia, equilibrium and rotational Newton’s laws.
Energy and Momentum of Rotating Systems
Rotational kinetic energy, torque and work, angular momentum/impulse, conservation, rolling and orbiting satellites.
Oscillations
Defining SHM, frequency/period, representation/analysis and energy of simple harmonic oscillators.
Fluids
Internal structure and density, pressure, fluids with Newton’s laws and fluids with conservation laws.
Turn the same situation into a diagram, graph, equation and explanation
Questions often change representation without changing the underlying physics. Train the translation, not just the formula.
- Diagram → model: choose the system, coordinate direction and relevant interactions.
- Graph → meaning: separate slope, area, sign and curvature instead of reading a graph as a picture.
- Equation → reasoning: state the relationship and assumptions before substituting numbers.
- Experiment → evidence: identify variables, measurements, graph choice, uncertainty and what result would support the claim.
Use old AP Physics 1 questions carefully
College Board publicly releases recent FRQs and scoring materials, but older questions may not fully match the redesigned course or the 2027 timing.
Start with the newest released FRQs
The newest public questions are the best first check of current content and reasoning style. Work them without notes, then compare your reasoning to scoring guidance and sample responses where available.
Important: released FRQs are not the same thing as a complete current practice exam; public secure multiple-choice forms are not reproduced here.
Do not throw away older questions
Older questions can still be excellent for forces, energy, momentum, rotation and experimental reasoning. The key is to separate useful physics from obsolete format assumptions.
Laboratory reasoning is part of the course, not an optional extra
AP Physics courses require substantial hands-on laboratory work, and the exam includes an experimental-design-and-analysis FRQ task.
AP Physics 1 courses are expected to devote at least 25% of instructional time to hands-on laboratory investigations. In AP Physics, a lab involves collecting and/or analyzing data, including qualitative observations as well as quantitative measurements.
- Define independent, dependent and controlled variables.
- Choose equipment and a repeatable procedure.
- Record observations and measurements clearly.
- Select a graph that can test the physical relationship.
- Address uncertainty, limitations and evidence.

Common questions before the 2027 exam
Use the linked resources when you need the full explanation.
Is AP Physics 1 calculus-based?
No. It is algebra-based. Graph slopes and areas are important, but calculus is not required as the course solution method.
Is there an AP Physics 1 formula sheet?
Yes. Students receive an equation/reference sheet. Knowing when and why to use a relationship matters more than memorizing the printed equations.
Are labs tested on AP Physics 1?
Experimental reasoning is directly assessed. One of the four current FRQ task types is Experimental Design and Analysis, and lab/data skills appear throughout the course.
Are old AP Physics 1 papers still useful?
Yes, selectively. Recent released FRQs are most useful, while older questions should be checked against the current course and 2027 exam structure before being used as a full simulation.
