Tile square footage, tile count, boxes, pattern waste and cost

A general square-footage result is not enough to order tile. This dedicated tile calculator converts the net floor or wall area into individual tiles and full boxes, then accounts for grout width and depth, setting material, layout pattern, cuts, reserve pieces, borders and openings. The tile layout visual changes with the selected dimensions and pattern so the numbers are connected to a real installation plan.

Floor, wall and known-area modes

Floor mode uses length and width. Wall mode can deduct doors, windows and other openings. Known-area mode accepts an area measured elsewhere. Multiple identical surfaces can be repeated without re-entering every dimension.

Tile dimensions and grout joint

Enter the actual tile length and width, not the nominal product name. The grout joint affects the repeating layout module and can change how many courses fit across a surface. The calculator reports an estimated count, but installers should still dry-layout the first rows because room squareness, edge cuts and manufacturer sizing tolerances matter.

Pattern-specific waste

Straight and brick layouts generally create less cutting waste than diagonal or herringbone patterns. The page provides a pattern adjustment and a separate user waste allowance. These are shown independently so a user can change one without losing track of the other.

Boxes and reserve tiles

Tiles are sold in full boxes. The calculator first estimates pieces, adds the chosen reserve, then rounds the box requirement upward using either tiles per box or coverage per box. The result displays both total pieces and full boxes so leftover stock can be planned for future repairs.

Borders, trim and price

Optional perimeter and border inputs estimate linear trim separately from field tile. Price can be entered per tile, per box or per square foot. The cost section identifies the pricing method and prevents a per-box quote from being multiplied as though it were a per-tile price.

Tile ordering checklist

• Confirm the exact tile dimensions and pieces per carton.
• Measure all openings and surfaces separately.
• Choose the actual layout pattern before setting waste.
• Check dye-lot and caliber requirements before combining boxes.
• Keep suitable spare tiles from the same production batch.

Example: 12 × 12 tile in a 10 × 12 room

The gross floor area is 120 square feet. A one-square-foot tile requires about 120 field pieces before joints, cuts and waste. With a 10% planning allowance, the order reaches about 132 pieces, then rounds up to the next full box according to the entered carton quantity.
