Estimate Roof Surface Area and Materials
Calculate roof surface area from footprint dimensions, roof style, pitch, overhang and waste. Estimate roofing squares, packages and material cost while the diagram changes between gable, hip, shed, flat and custom-plane roofs.

Roof area calculation formula
For a uniformly pitched roof, projected horizontal area is multiplied by the slope factor. With rise-per-12 pitch, the factor is the square root of 1 plus the square of rise divided by 12. Overhang is added before pitch, complexity and waste allowances.
Gable, hip and shed roofs
When all planes share the same pitch, total surface area equals the projected footprint multiplied by the slope factor even though the plane shapes differ. The calculator still draws each roof type separately and reports an estimated ridge or hip-edge length for planning.
Roofing squares and packages
One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Package count is calculated independently from entered package coverage and also compared with packages-per-square planning. Always use the manufacturer’s actual coverage, exposure and bundle instructions.
Does house square footage equal roof square footage?
No. Roof overhang and slope usually make roof surface area larger than the building footprint. Complex geometry and attached roofs add further area.
How do I calculate a roof with different pitches?
Measure each roof plane separately, apply its own slope factor, and add the plane areas. Custom projected-plane mode can be used for each separate plane.
How much waste should I add?
Waste depends on roof shape, material, valleys, hips, cuts and installation method. The calculator leaves the percentage editable rather than imposing one universal value.
