How to use the quilt backing calculator

Backing dimensions before yardage
The quilt backing calculator adds the selected overage to all four sides of the quilt top. Longarm quilters often request extra backing beyond the top so clamps and leaders can hold the fabric. Confirm the required allowance with the quilter before purchasing because equipment and quilting style differ.
Vertical and horizontal panel plans
Standard-width fabric usually requires piecing. Vertical panels run the fabric length parallel to the quilt length; horizontal panels rotate the cuts. The calculator evaluates panel count, seam allowances and cut length for both orientations, then can choose the layout requiring fewer linear yards. The lowest-yardage plan is not always the preferred visual seam placement.
Pattern repeat, shrinkage and wide back
A nonzero pattern repeat rounds each panel cut upward so motifs can be aligned. The shrinkage and cutting allowance is applied after geometric requirements. Wide-back fabric can reduce or eliminate seams; enter its actual usable width rather than the labeled bolt width if selvages or printing reduce the usable area.
Purchasing and cutting checks
Fabric is sold in linear yards, so the final requirement is rounded upward to a practical fraction of a yard. Directional prints, nap, fussy matching, prewashing and pieced design backs may require additional fabric beyond the computed amount. The visual panel map is a cutting plan, not a substitute for checking the actual print direction and defects.
