Calculate a Discount and See Every Dollar Saved

Find the sale price after a percentage or dollar coupon, reverse-calculate the original price, measure the actual discount between two prices, stack sequential discounts, add sales tax, multiply quantities and check a free-shipping threshold.

How the discount calculator works

For a percentage-off sale, the price after discount is the original price multiplied by one minus the discount rate. Fixed coupons are subtracted after percentage discounts and never reduce an item subtotal below zero. Tax is then applied to the discounted merchandise subtotal, while shipping is added only when the entered free-shipping threshold is not met.

50% off $34.99 example

Half of $34.99 is $17.495. With ordinary cent rounding, the sale price is $17.50 and the savings are $17.49. The calculator preserves the unrounded arithmetic internally before presenting currency values.

Stacked discounts

Sequential discounts multiply their remaining-price factors. For example, 20% off followed by 10% off leaves 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72 of the original price, which is an effective 28% discount.

Does sales tax apply before or after a coupon?

Rules differ by jurisdiction and coupon type. This tool applies tax after discounts as a planning convention; confirm local tax treatment when accuracy is legally important.

Can I calculate the original price from a sale price?

Yes. Choose “Find original price,” enter the paid price and the known discount percentage. Fixed coupon amounts are reversed before dividing by the remaining percentage.

Why is the answer one cent different from mental math?

Currency totals are normally rounded to the nearest cent. Half-cent results such as 17.495 can display as 17.50 while the savings display as 17.49 so that the rounded line items sum to the original price.
