How to calculate bark mulch coverage
Subtract the existing settled depth from the target finished depth. Multiply the remaining depth by bed area, then add settlement and waste allowances. The adjusted volume converts directly to cubic feet, cubic yards and bag count.

This bark mulch calculator estimates only the additional material needed to reach a target finished depth. That is different from calculators that assume an empty bed and can substantially overstate an annual top-up. The visual cross-section shows soil, existing mulch, new material and the final planned layer.
Existing mulch versus target depth
Measure the average existing layer at several locations. The calculator subtracts that depth from the target and rejects a negative addition. If the bed already meets or exceeds the target, the result explains that no extra volume is required under the selected measurements.
Settlement and waste
Fresh bark can settle after watering and weathering. The settlement allowance increases the new loose material so the bed can approach the desired final depth after settling. Waste covers handling, uneven ground and measurement uncertainty. The two factors are separate because they describe different causes.
Bags and bulk delivery
Bagged mulch may be labelled in cubic feet, while bulk material is sold in cubic yards. The calculator converts the same adjusted volume to both units and rounds bags upward. Bulk loads can be rounded according to the supplier’s minimum increment or truck capacity.
Mulch type and density
Shredded hardwood, bark nuggets, pine bark and other products have different bulk density and settlement behavior. Volume is the primary ordering measure, but the optional density estimate helps when a supplier quotes weight or a vehicle payload must be considered. Product labels and supplier specifications should override a planning preset.
How to calculate bark mulch coverage
Area multiplied by additional depth gives the required settled volume. Convert inches to feet before multiplying, then apply settlement and waste. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards or by the bag volume for the bag count.
