This hours calculator provides a dedicated calculation workflow rather than a generic converter. Time calculations should distinguish the elapsed interval from payable time. This calculator shows each subtraction and rounding stage separately.
Clock-time and overnight shifts
Clock mode converts each time to minutes after midnight. If the end time is earlier and overnight is allowed, 24 hours are added to the end.
Date-time intervals
Date-time mode uses the complete timestamp, so shifts longer than one day and intervals spanning dates are calculated directly.
Break subtraction and decimal hours
Unpaid break minutes are removed from elapsed minutes. Decimal hours divide net minutes by 60; for example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hour, not 0.30 hour.
Rounding order
The calculator subtracts the break first and then applies the chosen rounding interval and direction. Both unrounded and rounded values remain visible.
Regular, overtime and optional pay
Hours above the entered threshold are assigned to overtime. Optional gross pay multiplies regular hours by the rate and overtime hours by the selected multiplier.
How are overnight clock times handled?
When enabled, an end time earlier than the start time is treated as occurring on the next day.
Is 7 hours 30 minutes equal to 7.30 hours?
No. Thirty minutes is one half hour, so the decimal value is 7.5.
Does the calculator determine legal overtime?
No. It uses the threshold and multiplier entered by the user.
