Comparing established BMR equations
The BMR calculator compares the Mifflin–St Jeor and revised Harris–Benedict equations and, when body-fat information is supplied, the Katch–McArdle equation. Each uses different predictors, so their estimates need not match. U.S. customary measurements are converted to kilograms and centimeters before applying the formulas.
BMR is not total daily expenditure
The BMR calculator estimates energy use under resting conditions, not the calories needed for normal activity. Total daily expenditure requires an activity model or component-based estimate such as the separate TDEE calculator. Prediction equations describe population averages and can differ from measured resting metabolic rate because of body composition, health, temperature and individual variation. Use the spread between equations as evidence of uncertainty rather than selecting the largest or smallest result without justification.
Is BMR the same as daily calorie need?
No. BMR estimates energy at rest. Total daily expenditure also includes movement, exercise and food processing.
Why do the equations disagree?
They were derived from different populations and predictor sets, so some spread is expected.
When is Katch–McArdle shown?
It is included only when a positive body-fat percentage is supplied because it requires lean body mass.
