BMI Calculator with Healthy-Weight Range
Calculate adult body mass index from U.S. customary or metric measurements, then review the category, BMI Prime, Ponderal Index and the weight interval associated with the standard adult healthy-BMI range. Every conversion and threshold is shown instead of hidden behind a single number.

How to use this adult BMI calculator
This calculator is designed for adults age 20 and older. It combines the familiar BMI result with supporting measurements that make the number easier to interpret and audit.
What the BMI result means
Body mass index expresses weight relative to squared height. The calculator converts pounds and inches to kilograms and meters when U.S. units are selected, so both unit systems use the same underlying equation. It also reports the exact converted measurements used in the calculation.
Healthy-weight interval for the entered height
The displayed weight interval is calculated by solving the BMI equation at 18.5 and 24.9 for the entered height. It is a mathematical interval associated with standard adult BMI categories, not a personalized target or a diagnosis.
BMI Prime and Ponderal Index
BMI Prime divides the result by 25, making 1.00 the standard upper boundary of the healthy adult range. Ponderal Index uses height cubed rather than height squared and can provide another height-normalized value, especially when comparing people at very different heights.
Why this calculator is stronger than a one-number form
The result includes category boundaries, distance from the nearest healthy-range boundary, healthy-weight interval, converted measurements, BMI Prime and Ponderal Index. A live gauge shows exactly where the result falls without changing the numerical thresholds.
Limits and appropriate use
BMI is a screening tool. Athletes, older adults, pregnant people and individuals with unusual muscle or body-composition patterns may need more direct measurements and professional assessment. The calculator deliberately avoids turning BMI into a treatment recommendation.
Is this BMI calculator for children?
No. It is limited to adults age 20 and older because children and teens require BMI-for-age percentiles.
Why does BMI use height squared?
The traditional index scales body weight by height squared to create a practical population-level measure of weight relative to stature.
Does a healthy BMI guarantee good health?
No. BMI is one screening measure and should be interpreted with medical history, body composition, fitness and other health information.
