The VDOT calculator starts with average velocity in meters per minute. A quadratic equation estimates the oxygen cost of that velocity, while an exponential expression estimates the fraction sustainable for the entered duration. Dividing those values produces VDOT. The calculation uses the actual seconds entered rather than a rounded pace table, so a few seconds of improvement can be reflected without waiting for a table boundary.
Equivalent race performances
Equivalent times are found by solving the same VDOT equation backward for one mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. These are physiological-equivalence estimates, not promises. Course elevation, temperature, wind, surface, fueling, training specificity and race execution can make an athlete much stronger at one distance than another. The visual presents the times together so unrealistic extrapolation is easy to notice.
Training pace planning
The VDOT calculator also reports easy, marathon, threshold, interval and repetition planning paces.
