Ratio notation
A coffee ratio calculator normally expresses water mass per one part of dry coffee. A 1:16 ratio means 16 grams of brewing water for every gram of coffee. Grams, milliliters and fluid ounces

Bloom water

Finished beverage estimate
Ground coffee retains some water, so brewed beverage mass is lower than water poured. The coffee ratio calculator subtracts the entered retention amount per gram of coffee to estimate the finished beverage. Espresso, immersion drainage, paper absorption and cold-brew filtration behave differently, so retention is exposed rather than hidden. The serving count output is an estimate based on the entered finished serving size, not a promise that a brewer or carafe will hold that volume safely.
Dialing in flavor
If coffee tastes weak or sour, ratio is only one possible cause; grind size, water temperature, agitation, channeling and contact time also matter.
