Formula, method and interpretation

How to use the board foot calculator

The board foot calculator uses the U.S. sawn-lumber formula, supports metric dimensions, multiplies piece quantity, adds waste and calculates cost and solid volume. The sections below explain the data, assumptions and limitations so the answer can be checked rather than accepted as a generic black-box output.

The U.S. board-foot formula

One board foot is a volume equal to a board twelve inches wide, one inch thick and one foot long. The board foot calculator multiplies thickness in inches, width in inches and length in feet, then divides by twelve. Quantity is applied after the per-piece result so the report can show both values.

Nominal versus actual dimensions

Lumber may be sold by nominal dimensions even though the surfaced piece is smaller. Board-foot quotations can use the nominal or stated rough dimensions according to the seller and product. Enter the basis used in the price quotation. The calculator does not silently replace a 2×4 with a standardized actual size because hardwood, rough-sawn and specialty lumber practices differ.

Metric conversion

Millimeter and centimeter thickness or width inputs are converted to inches, while meter length is converted to feet. The board foot calculator then applies the same U.S. formula. This makes it possible to compare a metric cut list with a U.S. price per board foot without using an approximate mental conversion.

Waste and purchasing quantity

Waste is added to the base total after multiplying every piece. Allowance may cover defects, grain matching, kerf, trimming and mistakes. It should reflect the project and stock quality; a simple straight cut list may need less than a furniture project requiring color and grain selection. The result is not rounded to a seller’s bundle or minimum purchase.

Cost, linear feet and cubic feet

Material cost equals purchase board feet times price per board foot. Linear feet can help check moulding or board counts, while cubic feet describes solid volume. These measures are not interchangeable. A long narrow board can have the same board feet as a short wide board but a very different linear-foot total.

Board feet versus log scales

Doyle, Scribner and International rules estimate recoverable lumber from logs and use different equations. They are not the basic board-foot formula for already-sawn boards. This board foot calculator intentionally avoids mixing log-scale estimates into a lumber cut-list result. Confirm which measurement system appears on a timber or sawmill quotation.

Board Foot Calculator questions

Does a 2×4 use 2 by 4 in the formula?

Use the dimensions on which the seller bases board-foot pricing; nominal and actual practices can differ.

Can I enter metric dimensions?

Yes. They are converted internally before applying the U.S. board-foot formula.

Are log board feet included?

No. Log scaling is a separate estimate with rule-specific equations.

Lumber volume and board-foot buying context

Batch 6 canonical strengthening: Lumber volume and board-foot buying context. Lumber calculator searches based on thickness, width, length and quantity belong on the existing board-foot page. Board feet measure volume, while the new plywood calculator solves rectangular sheet coverage and orientation; the two intents are not interchangeable. Use actual dressed dimensions when estimating physical volume and supplier-listed nominal dimensions when pricing follows nominal board-foot conventions. Add waste, defects, moisture allowance and milling loss according to the purchasing situation.
