Accuracy and text level
Accuracy is words read correctly divided by running words. The default bands classify 95% or above as independent, 90% through 94.99% as instructional, and below 90% as difficult or frustration level. Your school or assessment system may specify different cutoffs, so both thresholds are editable.
Fluency and self-correction
Words correct per minute subtracts counted errors from running words and scales by elapsed time. Self-corrections support a separate ratio; they are not subtracted a second time. A prior WCPM result can be entered to show rate change without hiding current accuracy.
Use observation, not arithmetic alone
A running record includes qualitative evidence such as meaning, structure and visual information, phrasing, expression and error patterns. Use the calculator for arithmetic consistency while retaining the annotated record and professional judgment.

What counts as an error?
Use the rules of the running-record system being administered. Substitutions, omissions, insertions, appeals and repetitions may be treated differently by specific protocols.
How is the self-correction ratio calculated?
It is commonly reported as total errors plus self-corrections divided by self-corrections, expressed as 1:n.
Is WCPM the same as accuracy?
No. WCPM is a rate measure, while accuracy is the percentage of running words read correctly. Both should be interpreted with comprehension and reading behavior.
