Calculate Pine Straw Bales, Coverage and Project Cost

Measure the bed, select its shape, and use the coverage printed by your local bale supplier. Layers, settling and waste are calculated separately.

How to calculate pine straw bales

The calculator first finds the horizontal landscape-bed area. Rectangle area is length multiplied by width. Circle area uses the entered diameter. The known-area option supports irregular beds measured by another method or combined from several sections.

Application layers multiply the measured area. Settling and waste are then added as separate allowances. Settling represents material that compresses after installation, while waste covers uneven edges, wind loss and later touch-ups. Required bales are always rounded up because partial bales are rarely sold.

Use local bale coverage

Pine straw bales are not nationally standardized. A supplier may sell rectangular bales or round rolls with different density and expected coverage. Enter the supplier’s square-foot coverage at the depth you intend to install. For existing beds, avoid counting the plant canopy as bare ground unless pine straw will actually be placed beneath it.

For multiple beds, calculate each section separately or add their measured areas before applying layers. Keep fire-clearance, drainage and local landscape guidance in mind when placing organic material near structures.

How many square feet does one pine straw bale cover?

Coverage varies by bale and installation depth, so the calculator uses the local supplier coverage you enter rather than assuming one universal number.
